Prologue:

Alvin Straight had always been a man of few words. He lived a simple life on his farm in Iowa, content to spend his days tending to his crops and machinery. He had never been one for travel or adventure, preferring instead to stay close to home.

But all that changed when he received word that his brother Lyle had suffered a stroke. The two had been estranged for years, ever since a disagreement over their father’s inheritance tore the family apart.

Now, with Lyle’s health in jeopardy, Alvin found himself faced with a daunting task. His brother lived in Wisconsin, hundreds of miles away, and Alvin had no car and no driver’s license. But he was determined to make things right before it was too late.

And so, with nothing but his old lawnmower and the clothes on his back, Alvin set off on a journey that would change his life forever.

Chapter 1: The News

It was a warm summer morning when Alvin received the news. He was sitting on his front porch, sipping coffee and reading the newspaper, when the phone rang. He answered it with a grunt, expecting it to be a telemarketer or some other nuisance.

But instead, it was his daughter Rose. “Dad,” she said, her voice shaking. “I just got off the phone with Aunt Sally. Uncle Lyle had a stroke. They don’t know if he’s going to make it.”

Alvin felt a lump form in his throat. Lyle. His younger brother, with whom he had not spoken in over a decade. They had grown up together on the family farm, working side by side until their father’s death tore them apart.

Alvin had always regretted the way things had ended between them, but he had been too stubborn to make amends. Now, with Lyle’s life hanging in the balance, he knew he had to do something.

“Where is he?” he asked his daughter.

“Wisconsin,” she replied. “I can come pick you up and we can drive there together.”

But Alvin knew that was not an option. He had lost his driver’s license years ago due to his failing eyesight, and he had no desire to burden his daughter with such a long and arduous journey.

“No,” he said firmly. “I’ll figure something out.”

And so he hung up the phone, his mind already racing with ideas. He knew he had to see his brother, to make things right before it was too late. But how?

He sat on his porch for hours, pondering the possibilities. And then, as the sun began to set over the horizon, an idea struck him.

He would ride his lawnmower to Wisconsin.

It was a crazy idea, he knew. He was seventy-three years old, with bad knees and a failing heart. But he was also stubborn and determined, and he knew that this was something he had to do.

He went to bed that night with a plan forming in his mind. He would fix up his old lawnmower, pack some supplies, and hit the road. It would take him weeks to get there, but he didn’t care. He would see his brother, and he would make things right.

And so, the next morning, he got to work. He spent hours tinkering with the lawnmower, replacing parts and fixing up the engine. He packed a small backpack with some clothes, a few tools, and a picture of him and Lyle as young boys.

And then, with his heart pounding and his hands shaking, he climbed onto the lawnmower and turned the key.

The engine sputtered to life, and Alvin felt a surge of exhilaration. He was doing this. He was taking matters into his own hands, and nothing could stop him now.

He waved goodbye to his farm, to his home, and to the life he had known for so long. And then he set off down the road, his lawnmower chugging along at a steady pace.

The journey would be long and difficult, he knew. But he was ready for it. He was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead, to see his brother, and to make things right.

Chapter 2: The Decision

Alvin sat in his living room, staring blankly at the walls as thoughts raced through his mind. He couldn’t shake the news he had received earlier that day – his brother Lyle had suffered a stroke and may not recover. The two had been estranged for years, but Alvin couldn’t bear the thought of not getting the chance to make things right before it was too late.

He had no car and no driver’s license, but he knew he had to find a way to get to Wisconsin to see his brother. He considered asking friends or family for help, but he knew that would only complicate things. He needed a solution that was both simple and reliable.

As he sat there, sipping his coffee, an idea began to form in his mind. It was bold and unconventional, but Alvin had always been a man who wasn’t afraid to take risks. He would make the journey on his trusty lawnmower.

At first, the idea seemed foolish. After all, he was in his 70s and the journey would be long and arduous. But the more he thought about it, the more feasible it seemed. He would need supplies, of course – a tent, a sleeping bag, and plenty of food and water – but he was confident he could make it work.

Alvin stood up, the decision made. He would set off on his adventure in the morning.

The next day, he rose early and began to pack his supplies. He had brought his lawnmower into the living room the night before, and he spent a few moments examining it, checking the oil and the blades. It was an old machine, but it was sturdy and reliable.

As he loaded up his supplies onto the trailer he had attached to the back of the lawnmower, Alvin couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement building inside of him. It had been years since he had embarked on an adventure like this, and he was eager to see where this journey would take him.

He set off down the road, the wind in his hair and the sun on his face. As he rode, he felt a sense of freedom and exhilaration that he hadn’t experienced in years.

The journey was slow, but steady. Alvin traveled through small towns and along roads lined with cornfields and pastures. At times, he encountered curious onlookers who would wave or honk their horns in support. Other times, he faced harsh weather conditions, with rain and wind lashing at his face and making it difficult to see.

But through it all, Alvin remained determined. He was on a mission, and he wasn’t going to let anything stand in his way.

As the sun began to set on the first day of his journey, Alvin found a secluded spot to set up camp. He pitched his tent, and as he lay down on his sleeping bag, he couldn’t help but feel proud of himself. He had made it through the first day, and he was one step closer to seeing his brother.

As he drifted off to sleep, Alvin couldn’t help but think about the challenges that lay ahead. He knew the road ahead wouldn’t be easy, but he was determined to see it through to the end.

The next morning, he woke up early and set off down the road once again. The journey was long and arduous, but Alvin pressed on. He encountered a flat tire, which he managed to fix himself, and at times he felt like giving up. But every time he felt like he couldn’t go on, he thought of his brother and the promise he had made to himself.

Days turned into weeks, and the journey continued. Along the way, Alvin encountered a variety of interesting characters who offered him words of wisdom and encouragement. From a friendly teenage runaway to a kind elderly couple, Alvin learned that even strangers could become lifelong friends.

As he made his way closer to Wisconsin, Alvin began to reflect on his life and the moments that had led to his strained relationship with his brother. He began to realize the importance of forgiveness and second chances, and he knew that he needed to make things right before it was too late.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Alvin arrived in Wisconsin. He was exhausted and dirty, but there was a sense of satisfaction that came with knowing that he had accomplished what he had set out to do.

As he made his way to his brother’s bedside, Alvin felt a sense of renewal. He had been on a journey that had changed him in ways he couldn’t have imagined, and he knew that he would never forget the lessons he had learned along the way.

The decision to embark on this journey had been a bold one, but Alvin knew that it was the right one. It had led him to a newfound sense of purpose and a deeper appreciation for the journey of life.

Chapter 3: The Challenges

As Alvin continues on his journey, he faces a myriad of challenges that test his endurance and willpower. The first obstacle comes in the form of a flat tire, which Alvin manages to fix with some duct tape and a spare inner tube.

But the next hurdle is much more daunting – a severe thunderstorm that unleashes a deluge of rain and lightning. Alvin seeks shelter under a tree, but he soon realizes that it’s not safe to stay there.

He remembers a nearby gas station that he had passed earlier and decides to make a run for it. The rain pummels down on him, and the wind threatens to knock him off his lawnmower, but Alvin grits his teeth and presses on.

When he finally reaches the gas station, he is drenched to the bone and shivering from the cold. The station attendant takes pity on him and offers him a hot cup of coffee and a towel to dry off.

Alvin is grateful for the kindness, but he knows that he can’t stay there for long. He asks the attendant if he knows of any shelters or motels nearby, but the man shakes his head and informs him that the closest one is over 20 miles away.

Alvin resigns himself to the fact that he will have to spend the night outside in the storm. He takes a deep breath and sets off once again, this time with the wind at his back.

The rain continues to pour down, but Alvin is determined to keep going. He remembers the words of his father, who used to tell him that “a man is only as good as his word”. Alvin had made a promise to see his brother, and he wasn’t about to let a little rain stop him.

As he rides on, he begins to reflect on his past and the choices he had made. He had always been a stubborn and independent man, which had caused him to butt heads with his family and friends. But now, as he faced the storm alone, he realized the importance of relying on others and accepting help when it’s offered.

Hours pass, and the storm finally begins to subside. Alvin sees a rest area up ahead and decides to take a break. He parks his lawnmower under a covered area and stretches his legs, grateful for the chance to rest and dry off.

But his respite is short-lived. Just as he’s about to set off again, he hears a loud noise coming from his lawnmower. He checks the engine and notices that a belt has snapped.

Alvin curses under his breath, knowing that he doesn’t have a spare belt with him. He tries to improvise a fix with some shoelaces and twine, but it’s no use.

Just when he’s about to give up hope, a miraculous thing happens. A truck pulls up to the rest area, and a man gets out to stretch his legs. Alvin approaches him and explains his predicament.

The man introduces himself as Tom, a mechanic who happens to have a spare belt that fits Alvin’s lawnmower. Alvin can hardly believe his luck as Tom fixes the belt and refuses to accept any payment.

As Tom drives off, Alvin waves goodbye and continues on his journey, feeling grateful for the kindness of strangers. He had faced many challenges on his journey, but he had also experienced the goodness of humanity in unexpected ways.

Chapter 4: The Encounters

As Alvin continues on his journey to Wisconsin, he encounters a variety of interesting characters along the way. Each encounter brings its own set of challenges and surprises, but they all contribute to Alvin’s personal growth and understanding of the world around him.

The first encounter is with a friendly teenage runaway named Crystal. She is hitchhiking and Alvin is hesitant to pick her up, but her youthful energy and kind demeanor win him over. Crystal is fascinated by Alvin’s lawnmower and the two strike up a conversation. They talk about their lives, dreams, and the challenges they’ve faced. Alvin is touched by Crystal’s resilience and determination, despite her difficult circumstances. He offers her some of his food and they part ways, with Alvin wishing her luck on her journey.

The second encounter is with a kind elderly couple who offer Alvin a place to rest for the night. They insist on feeding him a hot meal and sharing stories about their own lives. The couple’s warmth and generosity remind Alvin of his own late wife and he shares some memories of their life together. The couple listens intently, offering words of comfort and wisdom. They encourage Alvin to continue on his journey, assuring him that he’ll find the answers he’s searching for.

The third encounter is with a group of bikers who are having a party on the side of the road. At first, Alvin is intimidated by their loud music and boisterous behavior, but they welcome him with open arms. They offer him a drink and ask him to share some stories about his journey. Alvin is hesitant at first, but he soon finds himself laughing and enjoying the company of these unlikely companions. They offer him a place by the fire and Alvin spends the night dancing and singing with his new friends.

The fourth encounter is with a young couple who are struggling to start their car. Alvin stops to offer his assistance and is able to fix the problem with his knowledge of engines. The couple is grateful and invites Alvin to join them for a cup of coffee. They talk about their own plans for the future and Alvin shares some of his own experiences. The couple is struck by Alvin’s wisdom and humility, and they offer him a place to stay for the night. Alvin declines, but he is grateful for the kindness they showed him.

The final encounter is with a solitary fisherman, who is sitting by a quiet stream. Alvin stops to admire the view and strikes up a conversation with the man. They talk about the beauty of nature and the importance of silence. The fisherman shares some of his own struggles with loss and grief, and Alvin listens intently. He offers the fisherman some of his own food and they sit in companionable silence for a while. Alvin feels a deep sense of peace and contentment, realizing that sometimes the greatest lessons come from simply being present in the moment.

As Alvin continues on his journey, he reflects on the people he’s met and the lessons he’s learned. Each encounter has added something meaningful to his journey, and he realizes that even strangers can become lifelong friends. He feels grateful for the experiences he’s had and the people he’s met, and he knows that his journey is far from over.

Chapter 5: The Memories

As Alvin travels through small towns and scenic countryside on his lawn mower, his mind wanders back to his past. He thinks about his wife, Doris, who had passed away, and his children who had all left home to start their own families. He contemplates the memories that have led to his strained relationship with his brother, Lyle.

Alvin remembers the time when both he and Lyle were young, and their father had given them each a plot of land to farm. Alvin had struggled, but Lyle had flourished, and their father had shown him favoritism. From that day on, Alvin had harbored resentment towards his brother. As they grew older, their differences only grew, leading to a falling out that lasted for years.

As Alvin continues his journey, he reflects on the story of the prodigal son. He realizes that the father in the story had forgiven his son and welcomed him back with open arms. It strikes a chord with him, and he realizes that he too needs to forgive his brother and make amends before it’s too late.

Alvin encounters a variety of interesting characters during his journey, each offering him words of wisdom and encouragement. One such character is a young girl named Rose, who is running away from home. Alvin takes her under his wing and they become friends. She reminds him of his own children, and he begins to regret the time he has wasted on his feud with Lyle.

As they travel together, Alvin shares stories of his past with Rose. He tells her about the time he had met his wife, Doris, at a church picnic. They had fallen in love, and he had known from that day forward that she was the one he was meant to spend his life with. He shares with her the joys and hardships of their life together, and how much he misses her.

Alvin’s thoughts then turn to his daughter, who he had not seen in years. He misses her and wishes he had been a better father to her. His mind then wanders back to his brother Lyle, and he realizes that his grudge against him was not worth sacrificing precious time with loved ones.

As he nears Wisconsin, Alvin begins to feel nervous about the impending reunion with his brother. He wonders how Lyle will receive him and if they will be able to reconcile after all these years. His anxiety is put to rest when he finally arrives at Lyle’s house.

Lyle is frail and unwell, but his face lights up when he sees Alvin. The two brothers share an emotional reunion, and all past grievances are forgotten. Lyle apologizes for his past behavior, and Alvin forgives him without hesitation.

As Alvin spends time with his brother, he realizes that he never should have held his grudge against him for so long. He had wasted so much time being angry and bitter, when all that really mattered was family. He feels a weight lifted off his shoulders and a sense of peace washes over him.

As he begins his journey back home to Iowa, Alvin is content. He has made amends with his brother, and he knows that he has gained a new perspective on life. He realizes that forgiveness is the key to happiness, and that life is too short to hold grudges. He looks forward to spending time with his family and making up for lost time.

Chapter 6: The Reunion

Alvin Slowly pulled up to the house where his brother Lyle lived. He had made it to Wisconsin after enduring a long and treacherous journey on his trusty lawnmower. Alvin gazed upon the small, modest house, wondering what might lay behind the closed door. He felt his heart rate increase and his palms grow clammy with nervousness. It had been over ten years since he had last seen his brother, and he was not sure how the reunion would go. But he knew he had to try. He had to apologize for the past and make amends with his brother before it was too late.

Alvin parked his lawnmower and slowly made his way to the front door of the house. The door creaked as he opened it, and he announced his arrival. A mild-mannered nurse greeted him and informed Alvin that Lyle was resting in his room. She led Alvin to Lyle’s bedroom and left them alone.

The scene that greeted him was heartbreaking. Lyle lay in bed, his body frail and thin, his once-vibrant eyes now dull and empty. Alvin swallowed hard and approached his brother’s bed. Lyle looked up at him, and their eyes met. Tears welled up in Alvin’s eyes, but he fought to keep them at bay. Lyle spoke first.

“Alvin, is that really you?” Lyle rasped, his voice barely above a whisper.

“Yes, it’s me, Lyle,” Alvin replied, his voice choked with emotion.

Lyle’s eyes filled with tears, and he reached out a trembling hand to grab Alvin’s. “I thought I would never see you again, brother,” Lyle said softly.

Alvin sat down on the edge of the bed, and they talked for what seemed like hours. Lyle told him about his stroke, his time in the hospital and his fears about what the future held. Alvin listened intently, empathizing with his brother’s plight. Then Alvin told Lyle about his journey on the lawnmower, and how he had come to realize how important family was.

“I know we haven’t always seen eye to eye, brother, but I want to make things right. I want to be here for you during this difficult time.” Alvin said as he held Lyle’s hand tightly.

Lyle looked at Alvin, his expression softening. “I forgive you, Alvin. We don’t have to live in the past. We have today, and that’s all that matters.”

Alvin felt a weight lifted off of his shoulders. “Thank you, Lyle. I don’t know what I would do without you.”

They talked for a while longer, laughing and catching up on old times. Alvin felt the bond between them growing stronger with every passing moment. They talked about their parents, their childhood memories, and their shared love for farming. As the night wore on, Lyle grew tired, and Alvin knew it was time to go.

“Goodnight, Lyle,” Alvin said, patting his brother’s hand. “I’ll come back tomorrow to see you.”

Lyle smiled weakly, “I’ll be here, brother. Don’t worry about me.”

Alvin stood up and made his way to the door. As he was about to leave, he turned around and looked at Lyle one more time. He knew that this visit had changed everything- for the better. He felt proud and grateful. He knew that he had done the right thing by coming to see his brother.

As Alvin left the house, he felt a sense of peace and contentment wash over him. He had finally made amends with his brother, and there was nothing that could match the feeling. He knew that the journey had been worth it. It had brought him closer to his brother, and he had gained much more than he ever thought possible- a renewed sense of purpose and a strengthened bond with his family.

Chapter 7: The Journey Home

The sun was setting behind Alvin as he steered his trusty lawnmower towards home. He wasn’t in a hurry to get there; he had all the time in the world now. His journey to Wisconsin had taken longer than expected, but it had been worth it. He had seen and experienced so much, and best of all, he had made amends with his brother Lyle.

It was hard to believe that just a few short weeks ago, Alvin had been content to live out his remaining years alone on his farm, tending to his apple trees and watching the world go by. But that all changed when he received the news that his brother was ill. Suddenly, Alvin had a purpose, a reason to get up in the morning and go out into the world.

As he rode along, Alvin couldn’t help but reflect on the people he had met along the way. There was the young runaway who reminded him of himself at that age, full of dreams and ambition. And then there was the kind elderly couple who had taken him in during a particularly rough patch of weather. They reminded him of his beloved wife, who had passed away many years ago.

Alvin had always been a man of few words, but something about this journey had awakened a deep sense of gratitude within him. He was overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity he had encountered, and he knew that he would never forget the lessons he had learned.

Finally, as the night fell on the small town where Alvin lived, he pulled into his farm. He was greeted by the sight of his apple trees, heavy with fruit, and his old dog waiting patiently by the gate. Alvin felt a deep sense of contentment wash over him, knowing that he had accomplished something meaningful.

As he made his way into the house, he thought about his brother Lyle, who was still recovering in Wisconsin. Alvin knew that he might never see him again, but he felt at peace with that. He had done all he could to make amends and show his love, and that was enough.

Alvin sat down at his kitchen table and poured himself a cup of coffee. As he sipped it, he thought about the future. He knew that he was still an old man, with limited years left to live. But he also knew that he had a renewed sense of purpose, a reason to keep going. He thought about the people he had met on his journey and realized that he wasn’t alone in this world.

As he sat there, lost in thought, Alvin heard a knock at the door. He got up to answer it and was surprised to find a group of his neighbors standing outside. They had heard about Alvin’s journey and wanted to welcome him home. Alvin felt tears prick at his eyes as he looked at their smiling faces.

For the first time in a long time, Alvin felt truly seen and appreciated. He realized that his journey had touched more lives than just his own. He knew that he had made a difference in the world, no matter how small.

As Alvin sat down with his neighbors, he knew that this was just the beginning of a new chapter in his life. He was excited to see where his journey would take him next, and he was grateful for every moment he had left. Alvin had learned that life was not about the destination, but about the journey itself. And he was ready for whatever lay ahead.

Suddenly, a car pulls up behind him. A man in his thirties, BILLY, steps out of the car and approaches Alvin.

BILLY:

Hey, you need some help?

ALVIN:

(standing up)

Yes, please. I seem to have a flat tire.

BILLY:

(laughing)

A flat tire on a lawnmower? That’s a new one.

ALVIN:

(smirking)

Yeah, well, I’m not exactly driving a Ferrari.

BILLY:

(laughing)

Fair enough. Let’s see if we can fix this.

Billy helps Alvin fix the flat tire and the two strike up a conversation as they work.

BILLY:

So where are you headed?

SAMANTHA

So where you headed on that thing anyway?

ALVIN

(to himself)

Where am I headed? That’s a good question.

(to Samantha)

I’m on my way to see my brother up in Wisconsin. He’s not doing too well.

SAMANTHA

I’m sorry to hear that. I’m Samantha, by the way.

ALVIN

(pulls out a photo)

This is Lyle. He’s my brother. We haven’t spoken in years, but I’m hoping to make things right.

SAMANTHA

(smiling)

Well, I’ll be rooting for ya. You know, they say the journey is sometimes more important than the destination.

ALVIN

(looking at Samantha)

And they’d be right.

The two share a moment of silence before Samantha speaks up again.

SAMANTHA

You know, I’m kinda on a journey myself. I ran away from home and I’ve been hitchhiking my way across the country.

ALVIN

(concerned)

That’s a dangerous business. You should be careful.

SAMANTHA

(smiling coyly)

I can take care of myself. You should see the pepper spray I carry.

Alvin chuckles and shakes his head.

ALVIN

Well, you take care now. And if you ever need a ride, don’t hesitate to ask.
