Apollo 13

Chapter 1

The three-man crew of Apollo 13 ignited their service module engine for the last time on their journey to the moon. Soon the capsule was passing through the Van Allen belt, the high radiation zone of charged particles surrounding the Earth. Astronaut Jim Lovell glanced out the window and proclaimed, “It looks like we’re really doing it—we’re going to the moon!” But soon after that, the mission changed from an adventure to a harrowing search for survival.

A command module oxygen tank exploded in the spacecraft, crippling the capsule and leaving its crew adrift in space. Without power, oxygen and water, the astronauts faced a desperate situation. Mission Control quickly mobilized their best and brightest to come up with a plan to get the crew of Apollo 13 back to Earth safely.

Chapter 2

As the Apollo 13 crew scrambled to restore their crippled spacecraft, they received some extraordinary support from scientists, engineers, and technicians on the ground. The ground teams worked round the clock to devise ingenious solutions to the problems that plagued the capsule. They sent emergency fixes up to the crew, and helped them troubleshoot the numerous glitches that persisted.

The crew’s survival was in question, but scientists worked diligently to keep their spirits up and ensure that they could make it safely home. Astronaut Ken Mattingly noted, “it was almost as if the world had taken over that mission.”

Chapter 3

The Apollo 13 mission was as much a battle against time as it was a battle against the elements. The crew had to jury-rig a considerable number of fixes to their spacecraft, while also conserving oxygen, water and fuel.

The astronauts worked diligently to keep their spacecraft on course. They ran the engine several times, conserving precious resources and ensuring a safe trajectory back to Earth.

Meanwhile, the team on the ground continued to devise innovative solutions to the various problems that arose. It was a race against time, but with the help of the experts in Mission Control, the three astronauts fought to survive.

Chapter 4

The crew of Apollo 13 narrowly escaped with their lives, and their success was celebrated around the world. Despite the perilous journey, the astronauts’ training and courage enabled them to make it back to Earth alive.

As the capsule splashed down in the Pacific Ocean, the crew was greeted with cheers from the lucky few who had gathered to witness their return. Even the President of the United States sent a telegram of congratulations and thanks.

For the three men aboard Apollo 13, the rest of their lives were forever changed by their adventures in space. They became a symbol of wonder and courage, and an inspiration to many.

Chapter 5

The Apollo 13 mission was hailed as one of the most successful failures in history. It was a mission of hope, courage and ingenuity, a mission to the far reaches of space and back. It was a mission that changed the course of history and captivated the world.

While their mission was deemed a “failure” in some respects, the crew of Apollo 13 showed the world that nothing is impossible. As Jim Lovell said, “we may have slipped a bit, but we never gave up.” The three astronauts will forever be remembered as heroes for their courage and resilience in the face of adversity.

JIM

(on intercom)

Mission control, this is Apollo 13. We are en route to the moon and all systems are in working order.

MISSION CONTROL

(on intercom)

We copy that, Apollo 13. Everything looks good from here.

Suddenly, the lights in the control room begin to flicker. Jim stares at the console in confusion, then activates the intercom.

JIM

(on intercom)

Mission control, what’s happening? We are experiencing some system failures.

MISSION CONTROL

(on intercom)

We’re looking into it, Apollo 13. Stand by.

EXT. APOLLO 13 – SPACE – DAY

The Apollo 13 space capsule drifts through the vacuum of space, its systems failing one by one as it hurtles towards the moon.

INT. APOLLO 13 – CONTROL ROOM – DAY

Jim stares intently at the console, waiting for a response from mission control.

MISSION CONTROL

(on intercom)

Apollo 13, we have detected a significant drop in pressure in your oxygen tanks. You need to perform a makeshift repair to prevent a total system failure.

JIM

(on intercom)

Understood. We’ll get to work on the repair.

Jim hurriedly turns to his fellow crewmembers, FRED HAISE and JACK SWIGERT, and hands them a list of supplies and instructions.

JIM

(to Fred and Jack)

We need to rig up a makeshift repair for the oxygen tanks. Grab whatever supplies you can find and get to work.

EXT. APOLLO 13 – SPACE – DAY

The Apollo 13 space capsule continues its journey, the astronauts inside hard at work on the makeshift repair.

INT. APOLLO 13 – CONTROL ROOM – DAY

Jim stares anxiously at the console, waiting for a response from mission control.

MISSION CONTROL

(on intercom)

Apollo 13, we’ve detected a slight improvement in the oxygen levels, but not enough to stabilize the system. You need to perform a more complicated repair.

JIM

(on intercom)

Understood. We’ll get to work on the repair.

EXT. APOLLO 13 – SPACE – DAY

The Apollo 13 space capsule continues its journey, the astronauts inside working feverishly on the more complicated repair.

INT. APOLLO 13 – CONTROL ROOM – DAY

Jim stares anxiously at the console, waiting for a response from mission control.

MISSION CONTROL

(on intercom)

Apollo 13, we’ve detected a significant improvement in the oxygen levels. You’ve done it – the system is stabilizing.

JIM

(on intercom)

We did it! Thank you, mission control.

EXT. APOLLO 13 – SPACE – DAY

The Apollo 13 space capsule continues its journey, the astronauts inside exhausted from the makeshift repair, but relieved that the system is now stabilized.

INT. APOLLO 13 – CONTROL ROOM – DAY

Jim relaxes in his chair, relieved that the system is now stabilized. He turns to the other crewmembers and smiles.

JIM

Well, that was a close one. We did it!

The rest of the control room erupts in cheers and applause, everyone relieved that the system is now stabilized.
