When the universe calls, one woman must answer the biggest question of all – are we alone?
Watch the original version of Contact
The world changed forever the day Dr. Eleanor “Ellie” Arroway received the first extraterrestrial radio signal ever picked up on Earth. For decades, humans had gazed up at the stars, wondering if there was anyone out there, but it had always seemed like a distant dream. But now, as the message came through, the impossible appeared to be becoming reality.
Ellie had spent her entire career listening to the universe, using radio telescopes to gather data from the far reaches of space. And now, as she sat in her lab, staring at the strange patterns on her computer screen, she felt something stir inside her.
This was it. This was everything she had been working towards. The chance to prove that she wasn’t just a crazy dreamer, but a scientist who had unlocked the secrets of the universe.
But even as she felt the thrill of discovery, she couldn’t help but wonder what it all meant. What kind of message could be sent from light-years away, and why had it been sent to Earth?
The signal was unlike anything Ellie had ever seen before. It was a series of numbers and patterns, repeating over and over again, like a code waiting to be cracked.
As soon as she saw it, she knew it was something special. It was the kind of signal that could change the course of human history, and she knew she had to act fast.
But even as she gathered her team together and began the task of decoding the message, Ellie couldn’t shake the feeling of unease that lingered at the back of her mind.
There was something about the signal that felt… off. Almost like it was too perfect, too precise, to have come from a natural source.
As the hours turned into days, and the days turned into weeks, the team worked tirelessly to unravel the mysteries of the signal. They tried every technique, every algorithm, every method they could think of, but still the message remained stubbornly opaque.
And outside the lab, the world was watching. News of the discovery had spread like wildfire, sparking excitement and fear in equal measure. Governments around the globe were scrambling to get involved, desperate to be the first to unlock the secrets of the signal.
But for Ellie, the real challenge wasn’t the competition from other scientists or the pressure from politicians. It was the growing sense of doubt that threatened to consume her.
She had always prided herself on her skepticism, her insistence on hard evidence and empirical proof. But as the message continued to elude her, she couldn’t help but wonder if there was something more going on.
What if the signal wasn’t what it appeared to be? What if it was a hoax, a trick played on her and the rest of the world?
And if that was the case, what did it say about her and her life’s work?
Despite her doubts, Ellie pressed on. She poured every ounce of her energy and intelligence into the decoding effort, determined to find the truth, whatever it may be.
But as the weeks turned into months, and the signal remained as enigmatic as ever, she began to wonder if she would ever get the answers she was searching for. And if she did, would she even want to know what they were?
As the message becomes clearer, Ellie begins to wonder about what it means for her beliefs and values. The signal appears to be an instruction manual for building a mysterious machine, something that could change humanity’s understanding of science and the universe.
Ellie’s mind was racing with possibilities as she sat in her dimly lit office, reviewing the signal data that had been transmitted from deep space. The patterns and rhythms of the message were unlike anything she had ever seen before, and yet there was something about them that felt eerily familiar. As she pored over the data, she began to feel something inside her shift, a sense of wonder and excitement that she had not felt in years.
But as the reality of the situation set in, Ellie began to feel a familiar sense of doubt creeping into her mind. She had always been a skeptic when it came to the existence of extraterrestrial life, and now she was confronted with the evidence that seemed to suggest otherwise. Could it be possible that everything she had ever believed was wrong?
As the decoding process continued, Ellie found herself drawn deeper into the mystery of the signal. It seemed to be a kind of instruction manual, detailing the construction and operation of a machine that was beyond anything humanity had ever created. The implications of such a device were staggering, and Ellie could not help but feel a sense of awe and terror at what it might mean for the future of the human race.
But as she struggled to make sense of the message, Ellie was also faced with more personal challenges. Her colleagues were skeptical of her claims, and she was forced to defend herself against accusations of fraud and deception. Even her closest friends seemed to doubt her, and she found herself increasingly isolated and alone in her quest for the truth.
It was then that Ellie realized that her beliefs and values were being tested in ways she had never imagined. As a scientist, she had always prided herself on her rationality and skepticism, but now she was faced with evidence that seemed to defy explanation. And as she grappled with the implications of the signal, she began to wonder about the nature of reality itself.
Could it be that everything she had ever believed was just a construct of her own mind? Was there a deeper truth to the universe that she had been blind to all along? As she struggled to make sense of the message and her own doubts, Ellie found herself drawn deeper into the mystery, determined to uncover the truth no matter where it might lead her.
As the weeks went by, the signal continued to reveal more and more information about the mysterious machine. Ellie and her team worked tirelessly to decode the message, piecing together clues and uncovering hidden meanings buried deep within the data. And as they worked, Ellie found herself drawn deeper into the mystery, her sense of wonder and curiosity growing with each passing day.
But as the decoding process approached its final stages, Ellie began to realize that there was a darker side to the signal’s message. The machine it described was not just a tool for exploring the universe, but a weapon, a means of exerting dominance and control over other intelligent beings. And as the reality of the situation set in, Ellie was faced with a difficult choice between her beliefs, the truth, and reality itself.
Could she continue to pursue her quest for knowledge, even if it meant helping to create a tool of destruction? Could she put aside her own doubts and fears, and trust in the message she had received? As Ellie struggled to find the answers to these questions, she knew that the fate of humanity hung in the balance.
The Decoding Process
As the world stands in awe of the mysterious signal, scientists from all over the world flock to the SETI Institute to offer their expertise in the decoding process. The message, however, proves to be more complex than anyone could have imagined. It is filled with mathematical equations, symbols, and patterns that seem to be unlike anything ever discovered before.
As Ellie’s team works tirelessly to decipher the message, they begin to realize that it is not just a simple message. It appears to be an instruction manual for building some kind of complex machine. The message carries the coordinates to the location where the machine is intended to be built. This discovery sends shockwaves across the world, and the discovery is no longer just a scientific breakthrough. It becomes a point of international concern, with various governments trying to secure the location of the machine to get their hands on the technology that could be unlocked by this signal.
Ellie stands at the forefront of this struggle, and she finds herself caught in a web of politics and power plays. Her team receives funding from the US Government, which raises concerns about where the machine will be built, who will have control of it, and how it will be used. Many countries feel that Ellie’s discovery should be treated as a global asset, and that the technology should be accessible to all nations.
As Ellie grapples with these issues, she also faces personal struggles. She is seen as an outsider by her colleagues and fellow scientists, who are skeptical of her claims. Many members of the scientific community accuse her of making up the signal, a claim that gains traction in the media. As the pressure builds, Ellie begins to doubt herself. She is plagued by the fear that she may have misinterpreted the signal, and that it could all be a terrible mistake.
Ellie’s doubts deepen when she receives a visit from a strange man, who claims to represent the National Security Council. He tells her that the US Government has been monitoring her progress and warns her not to disclose anything without prior approval. She is given a list of rules to follow, including who she can talk to and what she can say. The man strongly suggests that Ellie’s life could be in danger if she fails to comply with the rules.
Ellie feels trapped and powerless, unable to share her discovery with the world. The political pressure and personal doubts continue to mount, and she finds herself questioning her own sanity. She begins to experience vivid dreams that feel like memories, but she can’t make sense of them. She starts to wonder if she is losing her grip on reality.
As the decoding process continues, Ellie and her team discover something else hidden within the message. Embedded in the equations are instructions for building a frame of reference – literally creating a new system of reference. This discovery shakes Ellie to the core, as it hints at a level of power and knowledge that could change everything.
Meanwhile, Ellie’s team faces setbacks and challenges in the decoding process, as they encounter errors and unexpected complexities within the message. The decoding team also struggles to keep up with the many different languages and codes used in the message, leading to further delays. All the while, the world is watching and waiting for answers, and many are growing increasingly impatient.
Ellie must navigate this complex web of politics, power, and personal doubts, even as she works to decipher the message and construct the machine. She is forced to confront her own beliefs and values, as well as the possibility that the truth may not be what she had hoped for. And as the world powers scramble to decide upon a course of action, Ellie must make some difficult decisions between her loyalties, her beliefs, the truth, and reality, and the consequence of her choices will have a far-reaching impact on the world and beyond.
The signal has been decoded, and Ellie and her team are ecstatic. They have uncovered an invitation to join a community of intelligent beings from beyond the stars. The message is clear: the machine that the signal describes must be built. However, they soon realize that their efforts are not going to be easy. There are powers working against them, and Ellie must fight to keep the project afloat.
As soon as the message was decoded, governments around the world began to take notice. The idea of encountering an alien civilization was both frightening and exciting. Every nation wanted a piece of the action, and they all wanted to be the first to make contact. They feared that the machine could be a weapon, and that it could be used against them. They demanded to be part of the project, or they would take everything by force.
Ellie’s team was suddenly at the center of an international battle for control. Governments all over the world were vying for influence over the mission, vying for power over the groundbreaking technology that could be unleashed through the machine. They all wanted to be the first to communicate with the extraterrestrial beings.
The team members found themselves in a position of power. They had the knowledge and skill to build the machine, and they could choose to share their findings with whoever they wanted. However, the decision was not theirs alone to make. The political pressure was immense, and Ellie was quickly learning that the world was not as straightforward as she had thought.
Among the team, there were also those who were not convinced that pursuing the project was the right thing to do. Ellie’s ex-partner, Palmer Joss, questioned the morality of the mission, suggesting that the team was playing God by trying to contact alien beings. He believed that the priority should be on working to make Earth a better place, rather than searching for answers from beyond the planet. Palmer’s arguments further complicated Ellie’s struggle to determine what was the right thing to do.
Ellie soon realized that the pressure was not only coming from external sources. Within the team, there were also those who were working against her. David Drumlin, the project’s lead, was becoming increasingly hostile towards Ellie. His focus was on gaining the upper hand over other nations, and on using the machine for his own personal gain. Ellie saw that he was playing a dangerous game, and that his behaviour risked derailing the entire project.
Ellie finds herself in an impossible situation. She is torn between her desire to uncover the secrets of the universe and her commitment to doing the right thing. At the same time, she is fighting to protect the project from those who are trying to sabotage it.
She realizes that in order to succeed, she must use all of her resources, including her own personal connections and her vast knowledge of science, to steer the project in the right direction. She reaches out to allies around the world, convincing them to work together towards a common goal. She makes a risky decision to travel to the White House to meet with the President of the United States, where she makes an impassioned case for the importance of pursuing the project for the betterment of mankind.
As the project continues to move forward, tensions begin to rise within the team. The battle for control intensifies, and the future of the mission becomes increasingly uncertain. Ellie must navigate the treacherous political landscape and fight to keep her vision alive. She knows that the outcome will not only shape the future of humanity, but that it will also have a profound impact on her own life.
Chapter 5: The Journey Beyond Earth
Excitement and anticipation filled the air as Ellie and her team prepared for the ultimate journey into the unknown reaches of space. The construction of the mysterious machine was finally complete, and the launch date loomed on the horizon.
As Ellie settled into her cramped quarters, she felt a sense of nervousness and unease. The reality of the situation was starting to set in, and she couldn’t help but wonder what lay ahead. She had spent her entire life searching for signs of extraterrestrial life, but now that she was on the brink of discovering it, she wasn’t sure she was ready for what might come next.
She tried to push her doubts aside and focus on the task at hand. The journey would take her far beyond the confines of Earth and into the deepest reaches of the universe. She had been chosen for this mission because of her expertise in radio astronomy and her groundbreaking work on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. She was determined to do whatever it took to see the mission through to the end.
The launch was scheduled for early morning, and as the countdown began, Ellie’s heart raced with anticipation. The engines roared to life, and she felt the machine lurch forward into the sky. The G-forces pressed against her body, and she clung tightly to her seat as the machine ascended higher and higher.
As they broke through the Earth’s atmosphere, Ellie felt a sense of weightlessness wash over her. She gazed out the window at the stunning view of the planet below, marveling at the beauty of the world she was leaving behind. She knew that this journey would change her forever, but she had no idea just how much.
As they soared through the vacuum of space, Ellie’s mind raced as she pondered the implications of the mission. What would she find when they arrived at their destination? Would she be the first human to make contact with an extraterrestrial civilization? What kind of impact would this have on humanity as a whole?
As the machine passed through distant nebulae and past far-off galaxies, Ellie marveled at the wonders of the universe. She had spent her entire life searching for signs of life beyond Earth, and now she was seeing it firsthand. The experience was both humbling and exhilarating, and she knew that she would never forget it for as long as she lived.
As they neared their destination, Ellie’s excitement turned to apprehension. She knew that whatever lay ahead would be unlike anything she had ever experienced before. She steeled herself for the unknown and prepared to meet whatever lay ahead.
As the machine slowed to a stop, Ellie peered out the window at the strange, alien landscape before her. She had arrived at her destination, and she knew that the moment had come for her to make history. She took a deep breath and stepped out of the machine, ready to face whatever lay ahead.
Ellie felt a rush of excitement and fear as she climbed into the machine, preparing to embark on a journey to the edge of the universe. She knew that she might never come back, but something inside her pushed her forward. She was driven by a need to know the truth, to understand the signal and the beings behind it.
As the machine powered up, Ellie felt a jolt of electricity shoot through her body. She closed her eyes, bracing herself for the journey ahead. When she opened them again, she was floating in a dark void, surrounded by stars.
At first, Ellie was disoriented and afraid. She felt as if she was lost in an endless sea of nothingness. But then she began to see shapes forming in the darkness, like glittering jewels in the night sky. She realized that she was witnessing the birth of new stars and galaxies, and she felt the awe-inspiring power of the universe around her.
As she traveled deeper into space, Ellie encountered strange and wondrous phenomena that she had never seen before. Nebulae and black holes loomed in the distance, their gravity warping the fabric of space-time. She saw pulsars and quasars, and she marveled at the beauty of the cosmic dance unfolding before her.
But as the journey continued, Ellie began to sense that something was wrong. The signal was leading her towards a destination that felt… off somehow. There was a sense of malevolence in the air, a feeling that she was being led into a trap.
She tried to ignore these feelings, focusing instead on the wonder and majesty of the universe around her. But the sense of unease grew stronger with every passing moment.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Ellie arrived at her destination. She found herself standing on the surface of a massive planet, surrounded by towering structures that seemed to be made of some kind of crystal. In front of her, she saw a creature that defied description – a being of pure energy, pulsing with an otherworldly light.
Ellie knew that this creature was the source of the signal, the being that had sent the message to Earth. But she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. The being seemed too powerful, too unknowable.
It spoke to her in a language that she couldn’t understand, using images and sensations to communicate its message. Ellie felt a sense of awe and reverence as she listened, but also a deep sense of fear. She couldn’t shake the feeling that this being was not benevolent, that its intentions were not pure.
As the conversation continued, Ellie began to understand the true nature of the signal. It was not a message of peace or friendship, but rather a warning. The being was warning humanity of a great danger, a threat from beyond the stars that could destroy everything we hold dear.
Ellie felt a sense of despair as she realized the enormity of the danger facing the universe. She knew that she had to return to Earth and warn her fellow humans, but she also knew that they might not listen. They might dismiss her as a madwoman, or they might take the wrong course of action and make the situation worse.
As she prepared to leave the planet, Ellie knew that she was leaving behind a part of herself. She was leaving behind the sense of wonder and adventure that had driven her to undertake this incredible journey. But she also knew that she was returning to a world that desperately needed her – a world that was on the brink of destruction.
With a heavy heart, Ellie climbed back into the machine and began the journey back to Earth. She knew that she had a difficult road ahead of her, but she also knew that she had to keep fighting. She had to keep pushing forward, even if it meant sacrificing everything she held dear.
The blackness of space surrounded Ellie as she emerged from the wormhole, a small dot in the vast expanse of the cosmos. She looked around, awed by the beauty of the swirling colors and patterns of the universe. She had just traveled farther than any human had ever gone before and had made contact with extraterrestrial life.
In front of her was an enormous, translucent structure that glowed with a soft blue light. Ellie felt a sense of overwhelming awe and fear as she approached it. She could barely comprehend the advanced technology that had built it. Ellie was greeted by a towering, luminous figure who communicated telepathically.
“What is your purpose here?” the being asked in a voice that echoed in her mind.
Ellie explained that she was a human from Earth, that she had received their message and had come to meet them. The being studied her for a moment, seemingly contemplating her words.
“Why should we trust you?” it asked.
Ellie was taken aback, not expecting the question. She had no real answer; there was no way to truly convince them of her intentions.
“I’m here to learn,” she finally said.
The being regarded her for a moment longer before it shifted, and Ellie felt herself being enveloped in a field of energy. She closed her eyes and braced herself for the worst possible outcome, but when she opened them, she found herself back on Earth.
The entire journey had only taken seconds but felt like an eternity. Ellie stumbled out of the machine, disoriented and shaken. She looked around, and saw the people she had left behind. She could feel the weight of their expectations, as well as the weight of her experience.
She was flooded with so many emotions; she felt jubilant, awe-struck, and terrified all at once. She had communicated with extraterrestrial life, learning so much about the universe, and herself that it was overwhelming to process. But as she stepped out into the world, she knew that she had to find a way to share her experiences and knowledge with the world.
Ellie was determined to tell the truth, to share her incredible journey with the planet, but she had already faced so much opposition that she didn’t know how to proceed. She had no proof of what had happened to her in space, and the scientific community would not accept her words without evidence. She had to find a way to prove that her experience was real and that it had changed her fundamentally.
As she contemplated her next move, Ellie saw a bright light in the sky, the same light she had seen before her journey. She knew it was the wormhole opening again.
Ellie ran towards the light, and as she reached the threshold, she paused for a moment, feeling the weight of the decision ahead of her. She knew the risks of going back; it could mean leaving everything behind, everything she loved. But Ellie was a scientist; she had dedicated her life to the pursuit of truth, and she knew that there was more to discover out there.
Taking a deep breath, Ellie stepped into the light, and the wormhole closed behind her, leaving nothing but the echoes of her journey behind.
The world would never be the same again, and neither would Ellie. She had learned that there was more to the universe than humanity had ever realized. She had learned that there were beings beyond comprehension, beyond anything she could have ever imagined. And she had learned that sometimes, the truth was worth everything.
As she stepped out into the unknown, Ellie knew that she was not alone. She was surrounded by the infinite expanse of the cosmos, by mysteries beyond anything she could have ever dreamed. But she was ready. She was ready to explore, to learn, to discover. She was ready for anything the universe could throw at her.
Ellie Arroway had made contact with extraterrestrial life, and she was never going back.

ELLIE: (to herself) This wasn’t in the plan.
INT. SPACECRAFT COCKPIT – LATER
Ellie fights to regain control of the ship as it spins out of control.
ELLIE: Hang on! We’re going to crash!
EXT. SPACECRAFT – LATER
The spacecraft crashes into an unknown planet, and we see Ellie unconscious at the controls.
FADE TO BLACK.
INT. SPACECRAFT – DAY
Ellie sits alone in the cockpit of the spacecraft as it hurtles towards the edge of the universe. The lights flicker, and the ship lurches as it encounters unexpected turbulence.
Come on, hold together.
Suddenly, the ship jolts to a stop. Ellie looks around in confusion, trying to assess the damage.
What the hell just happened?
She hears a strange noise coming from the rear of the ship and gets out of the cockpit to investigate.
INT. REAR OF SPACECRAFT – DAY
As she enters the rear of the spacecraft, Ellie sees something she never expected – a small, glowing alien creature hovering in the air. She stares in shock as it approaches her, seemingly unafraid.
Oh my god.
(in a strange language, subtitled)
You can talk?
Yes, I have been sent to guide you on your journey.
Guide me? To where?
To the edge of the universe and beyond.
Ellie stares at the alien, trying to process what she is hearing.
Why me? Why was I chosen?
Because you have the courage and the curiosity to explore the unknown. You are a pioneer.
I’m just a scientist. I never thought I’d be going on this kind of adventure.
But you are more than a scientist. You are a seeker of truth. And that is why we chose you.
Ellie looks at the alien, feeling a sense of awe and wonder. She realizes that her journey is far from over, and that there are mysteries waiting for her that she could never have imagined.
